About Whittier, Alaska

If one one the Whittier cruises your final destination you might find following facts interesting. Whittier is Anchorage’s portal to Prince William Sound. Although Anchorage itself in on Upper Cook Inlet, the highest tides in the Northern America, muddy, fast-moving water offers no use for boating. Whittier, on the other hand, stands on the edge of a long fjord, whose clear waters are full of salmon orcas, and otters. Surrounded by mountains dripping with glaciers which are beautiful when the sun is shining, they also trap storms over the town and as a result 15 feet of rain and 20 feet of snow a year is average. Most of town’s 250 residents live in one 14-story structure, which certainly cuts down on snow-shoveling time.

In the past, the only way to get to from Anchorage to Whittier cruises was by riding through the mountain by train. Now the railway tunnel is paved creating North America’s longest highway tunnel and providing opportunities for buses, shuttles, and motorcoaches to take you to Anchorage.

Anchorage Airport to Whittier Transfer
We had reserved the transfer from the Anchorage airport to Whittier to board our cruise on Princess. Our flight and been delayed and our luggage was late in arriving. Our bus driver, Ernie, waited as long as he possibly could (he had to leave by a certain time in order to make the tunnel crossing at a scheduled time) and thanks to his kindness we were able to get our luggage just in time to board the bus! I was very impressed at his understanding for our situation, while also balancing his need to keep the other passengers on time. His commentary on the drive up was really informative and entertaining. I’d highly recommend ACT and a big kudos to Ernie!!

Terrific transportation option
A super-comfortable coach arrived at the Sheraton Anchorage to pick us up on the dot of 2pm, the beginning of the pickup window. Ion loaded our luggage underneath and departed for the next stop.
When all reserved passengers had signed his roster we took off, moderate speed and very safely all the way.
There is a recorded sightseeing narration at certain points, very informative. The scenery to Whittier is gorgeous.
We waited exactly one minute for our clearance to go through the tunnel; buses go before cars. Their buses have a restroom – sparkling clean and not too small.
Ion unloaded our luggage about 10 feet from the Princess checkin. We appreciated timely pickup, the plush coach, luggage loading, safe driving, and timely arrival. Perfect service in every way.
